FxFC readers are strongly encouraged to write their School Board members and Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and to sign the petition at this link (and printed below) to prohibit costly and unnecessary school name changes in Fairfax County.
Resolution to Prohibit Costly and Unnecessary School Name Changes in Fairfax County (like JEB Stuart)
TO PROHIBIT the unnecessary and costly renaming of public schools (like J.E.B. Stuart High School) in Fairfax County, Virginia, the following petition groups, organizations, officials, and residents of Fairfax County adopt the resolution set forth below:
WHEREAS, the Fairfax County Public Schools continue to endure budget shortfalls and financial constraints; and
WHEREAS, the costs associated with changing the names of schools are estimated to total as much as one million dollars per school; and
WHEREAS, such funds, if available, could be applied to many more pressing needs in the public schools such as decreasing classroom size, increasing teacher salaries, assuring special needs classes are adequately funded; meeting State health codes, and ensuring students have adequate materials; and
WHEREAS, attempts to rename schools, albeit well-intended, have often resulted in creating more divisions and tensions within the school and community than existed prior to such decisions; and
WHEREAS, students and the public benefit most from teaching history instead of eradicating history; and
WHEREAS, the renaming of public schools when done without appropriate reason and factual detailed information prevents the pursuit of creating positive solutions that benefit both the community and students served;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the undersigned Fairfax County residents, officials and constituents, hereby ask the Fairfax County School Board (FCSB) to refrain from the unnecessary and costly renaming of public county schools including, but not limited to J.E.B. Stuart High School, Robert E. Lee High School, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, James Madison High School, Mount Vernon High School, Fairfax High School, Langley High School, Chantilly High School, Hayfield Secondary School, Mosby Woods Elementary School, and Ravensworth Elementary School, etc.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any decisions to rename public schools in Fairfax County be based on a criteria that serves the affected community, the will of the majority of the students, alumni and county residents who have vested interests in the outcome of such decisions. In addition, any current renaming decision should involve a process that includes the local impacted community, be based on factual discussions, represent significant historical facts and be considerate of all budgetary implications to include the compensation of teachers and administrators. A complete budget impact analysis on a decision to rename a school is to be provided to the affected community and the community at large which is served by the FCSB.
