The Legendary Story of Virginia’s Thomas Jefferson High School

CAPAFC: A Virginia state-chartered magnet school and operated by Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology (aka TJ or TJHSST) graduated 401 students in 2015. A total of 269 students attended colleges ranked among top 36 according to the U.S. News & World Report National Ranking (2015), including top ranked Princeton University and 36th ranked Georgia Tech., accounting for two-thirds of the Class of 2015. Among them 35 students attended Ivy League schools except Brown University, making up 8.7% of the graduate population. In addition, five students attended top liberal arts colleges, including Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Pomona and Wellesley. Note that 31 students attended the four elite “tech” schools, including Stanford, MIT, Cal Tech, and Carnegie Mellon.

Interestingly, 41% of the class (163 students) attended Virginia public universities, including University of Virginia, College of William and Mary,and Virginia Tech. TJ has been ranked “The Best” public high school in the nation from 2007 to 2013. Admissions to TJ have been highly competitive and selective, ranging from 15% for Class of 2015 to 17.9% for Class of 2019. All eighth graders in five Northern Virginia counties, including Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, Fauquier and Prince William are allowed to apply for admissions.
